How to Help Seniors Get Motivated!

In our childhood years and throughout our adult life it is important to stay active. Children run and play all day. We grow up and get jobs and take care of our homes and responsibilities. But, when we become senior citizens we tend to slow down a lot, take it easy or even become depressed or isolated. Here are some steps to keep yourself, friends and family active.

Step 1 – Aid in motivation.
The first step is to get to know them and how they are really feeling. Find out what they use to do when they were younger and if they have any desires to accomplish anything within the next few years, but just can't get moving. Sometimes they have a desire to be active but they need a little push.

Step 2 – Get them outside.
If they are confined to their rooms or house, let them know you could use a little company and invite them to the store or to go for a walk. If they are in a wheel chair, take the time and help them along.

Step 3 – Find local transportation/shuttles.
Check out the organizations, activities and transportation available for seniors in the area. Some communities provide a ride to and from the home or a central location.

Step 4 – Listen. They have a lot to share.
You can learn a lot from older ones. They have lived 60 years plus and have a lot of knowledge. During your conversations with them be uplifting and be a good listener.

Step 5 – Less sugar, more fruit.
Share healthy foods and minimize the amount of sugar intake. Sugar can contribute to depression, where fruits and vegetables provide more energy. Did you know that an apple has the same "waking" power a cup of a coffee?

Step 6 – Don't stop what you like.
A key to being active when you get older is to never stop doing the things you like to do. Keep walking, enjoy activities, hobbies and eating right.
